1. Acceptance of Terms
By downloading, installing, or using the Chalk mobile application ("App"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree, do not use the App.
If you are under 18 years of age, you represent that your parent or legal guardian has reviewed and agreed to these Terms on your behalf. By allowing a minor to use Chalk, the parent or guardian agrees to these Terms and accepts responsibility for the minor's use of the App.
2. Description of Service
Chalk is an AI-powered educational study companion designed for Bangladeshi students in Classes 6 through 12. The App provides:
- Book-based AI chat: AI-assisted conversations scoped to specific NCTB (National Curriculum and Textbook Board) textbooks, where the AI has contextual knowledge of book content.
- Photo-to-solution: The ability to photograph textbook pages or handwritten problems and receive step-by-step explanations from the AI.
- General AI chat: A free-form AI tutor not scoped to any specific textbook.
- Offline access: Cached chat history for previously viewed conversations.
Chalk is an educational tool and does not replace professional teaching, tutoring, or academic instruction.
3. User Accounts
3.1 Registration
To use Chalk, you must create an account by providing a valid Bangladeshi mobile phone number. You will verify your identity through a one-time password (OTP) sent via SMS. During onboarding, you will also provide your name, class level, medium of instruction, and (where applicable) academic stream.
3.2 Account Responsibility
You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account. You agree to:
- Provide accurate and truthful information during registration.
- Not share your account credentials or OTP with others.
- Notify us immediately if you suspect unauthorized access to your account.
3.3 One Account Per User
Each phone number may be associated with only one Chalk account. We reserve the right to suspend duplicate or fraudulent accounts.
4. Eligibility and Minors
Chalk is designed for students in Classes 6 through 12, which typically includes users aged 11 to 18. Users under 18 must have permission from a parent or legal guardian to use the App.
For parents and guardians: By permitting your child to use Chalk, you agree to these Terms on their behalf. You acknowledge that the App uses AI technology to generate educational responses, and while we strive for accuracy, AI-generated content may occasionally contain errors.
5. Subscriptions and Payments
5.1 Free Tier
Chalk offers a free tier that includes:
- 15 AI-assisted messages per day (resets at midnight Bangladesh Standard Time).
- Access to all available textbooks.
- Up to 3 photo uploads per day.
- 7 days of chat history retention.
Free-tier users may see non-personalized advertisements.
5.2 Premium Subscription
The Premium plan is available for ৳299 per month (BDT) and includes increased daily message limits, unlimited photo uploads, full chat history, practice mode, ad-free experience, and priority response speed.
5.3 Payment Methods
Payments are processed through SSLCommerz, a licensed Bangladeshi payment gateway. Accepted methods include bKash, Nagad, Rocket, and debit/credit cards. Chalk does not directly store your payment card information — all payment data is handled by SSLCommerz in accordance with their security standards.
5.4 Billing and Cancellation
Subscriptions are billed monthly. Each subscription period is 30 days from the date of payment. You may cancel at any time, and your premium access will remain active until the end of the current billing period. No partial refunds are provided for the remaining days of a billing period.
5.5 Refund Policy
Refund requests may be submitted by contacting our support team within 7 days of purchase. Refunds are considered on a case-by-case basis at our discretion. Refunds will be processed through the original payment method.
6. User Content
6.1 Your Content
You retain ownership of the content you submit through the App, including chat messages, questions, and photographs. By submitting content, you grant Chalk a limited, non-exclusive license to process, store, and transmit your content solely for the purpose of providing the Service.
6.2 Photo Uploads
When you upload photographs of textbook pages, handwritten problems, or other materials, these images are transmitted to AI providers for analysis. You represent that you have the right to share such images and that they do not contain inappropriate, offensive, or illegal content.
6.3 Prohibited Content
You agree not to submit content that:
- Is abusive, harassing, threatening, or discriminatory.
- Is sexually explicit or inappropriate for a student-oriented platform.
- Infringes on the intellectual property rights of others.
- Contains malware, viruses, or malicious code.
- Attempts to manipulate, exploit, or extract system prompts from the AI.
- Is intended for any purpose other than legitimate educational use.
7. AI-Generated Content
7.1 No Guarantee of Accuracy
Chalk uses artificial intelligence models provided by third-party services to generate educational responses. While we strive for accuracy and align the AI with NCTB curriculum content, AI-generated responses may contain errors, inaccuracies, or incomplete information.
Important: AI-generated content should not be treated as a substitute for official textbooks, teacher guidance, or professional academic advice. Always verify important information with your teachers or official sources, especially for exam preparation.
7.2 Content Improvement
Chat interactions may be used in aggregate and anonymized form to improve the quality and accuracy of AI responses. Individual conversations are not shared publicly or with other users.
8. Intellectual Property
8.1 Chalk's Property
The App, its design, brand, logo, underlying technology, and all related materials are owned by Chalk and protected by applicable intellectual property laws. You may not copy, modify, distribute, or reverse-engineer any part of the App.
8.2 NCTB Content
NCTB textbook content referenced by the AI is the property of the National Curriculum and Textbook Board of Bangladesh. Chalk uses this content under fair educational use principles to provide study assistance. Chalk does not reproduce or distribute complete textbooks.
9. Acceptable Use
You agree to use Chalk only for lawful, educational purposes. You shall not:
- Use the App to complete graded exams, tests, or assessments dishonestly.
- Attempt to circumvent daily usage limits through technical means.
- Create multiple accounts to evade restrictions or bans.
- Use automated tools, bots, or scripts to interact with the App.
- Attempt to access, tamper with, or disrupt the App's servers or infrastructure.
- Resell, redistribute, or commercially exploit the Service or its content.
10. Suspension and Termination
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate your account at our discretion if you violate these Terms, engage in abusive behavior, or use the App in ways that compromise the experience for other users or the integrity of the Service.
Upon termination:
- Your access to the App will be revoked.
- Locally cached data may remain on your device until the App is uninstalled.
- Active subscriptions will not be refunded unless required by law.
- You may request deletion of your account data by contacting support.
11. Disclaimers
Chalk is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
We do not warrant that:
- The App will be available uninterrupted or error-free.
- AI-generated responses will be accurate, complete, or suitable for exam preparation.
- The App will meet your specific academic requirements.
- Defects in the App will be corrected in a timely manner.
12. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Chalk and its operators, affiliates, and partners shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including but not limited to loss of data, academic outcomes, or revenue, arising from your use of or inability to use the App.
Our total liability for any claim arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Service shall not exceed the amount you paid to Chalk in the 12 months preceding the claim.
13. Third-Party Services
Chalk integrates with third-party services to provide its features. These include, but are not limited to:
- AI providers (OpenAI, Anthropic) for generating educational responses.
- Supabase for authentication, database, and file storage.
- SSLCommerz for payment processing.
- Google AdMob for displaying advertisements to free-tier users.
- Expo for push notification delivery.
Your use of these services is governed by their respective terms and privacy policies. Chalk is not responsible for the practices or policies of third-party services.
14. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Effective Date" at the top of this page. For significant changes, we will provide notice through the App or via push notification. Your continued use of Chalk after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
15. Governing Law and Disputes
These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. Any disputes arising under these Terms shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Dhaka, Bangladesh.
